When you live in a home for several years, it’s easy to turn a blind eye to how dated certain things become overtime. This can get really pricey when you decide you want to sell the house, or you decide your house isn’t in acceptable condition. Something I love to do is keep updating my occasionally so that things stay fresh and updated all the time. I of course stay on top of things like paint touch-ups but I also like to stay on top of my decor and style.
Here are 6 ways you can update your home without breaking the bank.
This has to be one of the easiest ways to make your home feel more bright and airy. Just adding a plant will modernize the room. I personally love buying faux plants, there’s no upkeep and they are usually much more affordable than a real plant.
2. LIGHT FIXTURES
They say lighting is the accessories of the home. Although it’s not the cheapest way to update a whole house, you can progressively change out the lighting of the entire home over the course of a few months. Not only can different lighting change the look of the room, it can change the feel of the room.
Our home was brand new when we purchased it, but unfortunately it came with cheap and dim fixtures. In the past year or so we have switched out the fixtures of the whole house and it has made a world of a difference. Our home now looks more “custom” and helps the house flow better from one room to the next.
Our favorite place to purchase light fixtures is Wayfair.com.
3. PILLOW COVERS
This tip has to be my favorite. Pillows can make SUCH a big difference in a room. Instead of accenting with permanent things like wall paper, or bright paint. I LOVE to switch out my pillow covers. I used to love buying new pillows, but boy can that get expensive! Pillow covers are a great, more affordable way to update an old couch or add texture to an otherwise boring room.
4. DECORATE YOUR COFFEE TABLE
The coffee table is usually the heart of the living room, so it must be both functional AND ascetically pleasing. I have an entire post on how to style the perfect coffee table, where I give some tips & tricks interior decorators use to update a coffee table.
5. AREA RUGS
Our home originally came with carpet in our living room, so I didn’t understand the importance of an area rug until recently. Not only is an area rug great for separation between rooms (especially in an open floor plan home), but it is also just as important to have the correct size rug in the space.
A rug that is too large for the space can make it feel overwhelming, and a rug which is too small can crowd the area.I found this great rug size & placement guide on Pinterest, it can really help a clueless person, like myself.
6. MIX & MATCH
Furnishing a home can be REALLY expensive. My biggest tip would be to take your time and don’t get frustrated with the amount of space you have to fill. Once you have the big stuff, like the couch, dining room set, or your bed, the small stuff can wait. I love the look of mixing & matching furniture.
I have been looking for the perfect side table for what seemed like forever. Although they did sell one with our coffee table that matched, I was looking for something more modern. I JUST found this gorgeous marble & gold accent table last week and I don’t think I’ve ever added something to my cart so quickly. I like to keep my eye out online for sales and deals, and when I’m furnishing a specific room I make weekly trips to my favorite stores (Target, Homegoods, TjMaxx, Marshals, and World Market).
Moral of the story, good things come to those who wait. I promise, it’ll come to you.
